CASM Africa

Artisanal and Small Scale Mining is a survival activity that has been in existence for a really long time in Africa, and has varying forms that are complex to define. But in this case, the definition will be limited into two types; The artisanal miner who has made mining a permanent  profession and the seasonal ASM who operates occasionally and migrates frequently in search of fortune.

Most of the African people are exposed to extreme hunger, unemployment and  poverty, therefore they have to search for alternative means of survival , and sometimes artisanal and small scale mining is the only key that opens “the door of hope”. CASM Africa is a community for artisanal and small scale mining which was borne to raise the profile of artisanal and small scale miners, acknowledge the achievement and contribution made by ASM to the continent and also track down and record successful accomplishments and interventions, and most of all help and guide Artisanal Small Scale Miners.

CASM Africa is the African region supporter of CASM GLOBAL, whose main mandate is to look after the interests of artisanal and small scale miners and the communities they live in . CASM Africa secretariat is Mintek’s SSMB ( Small Scale Mining and Beneficiation Division). CASM Africa manages CASM’S small grants facility. The individuals and organizations that are awarded these grants, address the needs of its five programmes. these are : Development and sustainability, special project, social issues, health and safety and education.
