Mapping ASM

Artisanal and Small-scale Mining (ASM) is a global reality. One estimate that more than 100 million people globally depend either directly or indirectly on ASM for their livelihoods. As ASM is mainly an informal activity, it is hard to find reliable data about the sector. Based on the available sources and CASM estimates, ASM country profiles are published together with global maps of ASM around the world.

Population Economically Dependent on Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining around the World

The data primarily reflects the reality in the sectors of diamonds and gemstones, gold and other metals. We have also added data on industrial minerals where available.

Among other
ones, two important sources were used to build the maps:
  • The Minerals and Sustainable Development (MMSD) Project, see here.
  • The Artisanal & Small-scale
Mining and Livelihoods in Africa (PACT), see here.

This is a work in progress, we would very much welcome feedback. If you can
